Refurbishment to B&B and Conference Accommodation at Fitz
Over the next year we are giving our 1960s D E and F staircases a makeover. This marks Phase 2 of our accommodation refurbishment scheme, building on the design concepts used successfully in the first phase of the project for A B and C staircases.
Fitzwilliam College was the first higher education project by renowned architect Sir Denys Lasdun, with the initial students moving into rooms in the new buildings in 1963. We are also planning a new-look entrance to the North Lodge. A series of push-outs towards the Huntingdon Road will transform that aspect of the College, whilst retaining the essential features of the original Lasdun design.
The building works started in July 2020 and are due to be completed by May 2021. The programme allows for short breaks in the construction work at times of particular sensitivity for the College. Our architects RH Partnership were carefully selected for their expertise in bringing 1960s accommodation up to today’s technical, environmental and social standards. Energy-saving technology and materials are being used to maximise heat retention and to reduce our carbon footprint. Internationally-recognised BREEAM standards are being implemented where appropriate to ensure a sustainable approach. The aim is not just to make these 1960s buildings fit for purpose, but to create student accommodation that will be among the best in Cambridge.
Newly refurbished staircases will be available for B&B and residential conferences from summer 2021. We look forward to welcoming you, please do get in touch if you would like to make a booking with us.
